A roadkill rat I found baking in the sun in a parking lot in Alabama. You can't see it, but there were flies all over it. The smell almost killed me and I felt the need to wash my hands after taking this picture, even though I didn't touch it.

If hanging a dog by the neck with its feet barely touching the ground, letting it starve to death, while hundreds of people walk past it, are told that it is "art" and dismiss the animal abuse as justified, then yes.
It's like, you see this rat smashed on the ground clearly by the fault of a car, a human invention, but does one feel longing for the rat? Most people don't like rats, does that give good reason for their torture and demise? Would this be any different if it were a road kill cat on the pavement? People would be sickened by it if it were a house cat, but a rat most likely doesn't phase many people. It's kinda like a really concealed racist metaphor (or in this case, specieist).
